A
wise man once sagely noted that as one door closes, another
seems to open. Should he have needed an example to prove his
theory, Sydney quintet Brace could have been it.
Though it took a good year for the pieces to fall completely
into place, the demise of internationally acclaimed Canberra
band Henry's Anger in December 2000 could well be regarded as
the conception of Brace.
Indeed it was about nine months later that three of its members,
Jamie Thomas, Rod Yates and Paddy Coffey, first set foot in
a rehearsal studio to embark on a new project. Certain only
that they wanted to work together, and that they didn't want
simply to mimic the musical direction of their previous outfit,
the search for other members began.
Enter keyboardist Lachlan Mitchell and drummer Tim Munk. Lachlan's
association with Jamie, Rod and Paddy stretches back years to
when he mixed Henry's Anger's ARIA nominated album 'Personality
Test'. Having remained firm friends ever since, when the trio
decided they wanted a keyboard player to add extra texture to
the songs they were writing, Lachlan - who had also played with
Sydney black metallers Naxzul - was the first choice. As indeed
was Tim Munk. As drummer with several Canberra bands, all of
whom had supported Henry's Anger at one time or another, his
ability and attitude made him the obvious first choice for the
drummer's stool.
With the line-up in place, the band set about writing and growing
as a unit.
In July 2002, having spent the previous nine months sculpting
a collection of songs as melodic as they were rocking and inventive,
Brace entered the studio to record their début EP, 'Before You
Begin'. Titled in reference to the fact that their career had,
well, yet to truly begin in terms of playing live and touring,
it's a confident slice of intelligent rock that bypasses the
post grunge, nu metal and nu punk set in favour of a more refined,
experimental yet easily digestible collection of songs.
Set for release through Chatterbox Records in October 2002,
it's the first step in a journey which is about to well and
truly begin - with live shows booked from September onwards,
the time to leave the rehearsal room and show that the past
year has been well spent is now. Hold on tight.
